Helford Regatta: A Great Cornish Summer Tradition

There are some Cornish summer traditions that really don’t need improving.

Give us a river, a collection of boats, several generations of highly competitive local families, a few people who haven’t quite realised how cold the water is going to be and the possibility of a drink afterwards, and everyone is perfectly happy.

The Helford Regatta is one of those occasions.

Held on one of Cornwall’s most beautiful stretches of water, it is a wonderfully old-fashioned celebration of life on and around the Helford River: rowing, swimming, paddling, families, spectators and the sort of friendly competition that can become unexpectedly serious once someone you know is in the boat. For us at Rosemullion, it’s also very close to home.

Races include: father & child (15 and under), ladies rowing, centenarian rowing (3 in a boat with combined crew age of more than 100), lady & gentleman pair rowing, relay rowing and of course The Landlord’s Race Rowing Backwards!

More than just a race

The word ‘regatta’ might conjure up images of immaculate yachts and serious sailors in technical clothing, but Cornwall’s traditional village regattas are rather more democratic affairs.

Many have been taking place for generations, bringing entire communities down to the water to race, swim, row, paddle – or simply watch from the bank whether you’re on the water, watching from The Ferry Boat Inn from the Helford Passage on the North side, or from The Shipwrights Arms (in the Helford Village on the south).

The Helford Village Regatta is unusual in that sailing isn’t really the point. Here the emphasis is on swimming, rowing and paddling: exactly the sort of activities that have always been part of summer life on the river.

That accessibility is part of their charm. You don’t necessarily need an expensive boat or years of sailing experience to get involved. Children compete alongside parents, friends race friends, and people who began the day insisting that they were “only watching” have a habit of finding themselves taking part.

In an age when so many sporting events have become increasingly professionalised, there is something rather wonderful about that.

A river made for the Helford Regatta

Of course, the Helford itself is a large part of the appeal.

Sheltered, wooded and extraordinarily beautiful, the river winds inland from Falmouth Bay through creeks, woodland and small waterside communities. Boats of every description are part of the landscape here, from dinghies and paddleboards to yachts and traditional Cornish pilot gigs although happily super yachts haven’t got the memo yet.

Whilst its beauty helps to raise the spirits it is happily also the landscape in which we, at Rosemullion Distillery, make our spirits. Our distillery sits in the countryside close to the Helford River, where we make our gin, rum and whisky in small batches. Cornwall isn’t simply a name on our labels: the place itself is part of what we produce, from the Cornish rainwater used during fermentation and distillation to local fruits and botanicals.

So supporting the people and traditions around the Helford has always made sense to us.

The Helford River Gig Club

Talking about the Helford Regatta seems like a natural moment for us to boast about our longstanding relationship with Helford River Gig Club.

The club itself began in 1993, when a small group met at the Prince of Wales pub in Newtown, St Martin. Its first wooden gig, Helford, was launched at Gweek two years later.

Today the club keeps alive one of Cornwall’s great maritime traditions.

Cornish pilot gigs evolved as fast, tough working boats. Their job was once exactly what their name suggests: carrying pilots out to ships arriving off the Cornish coast. Speed mattered because the first pilot to reach an incoming vessel generally got the work.

The result was a boat designed to move quickly through demanding seas – and, ultimately, the beginnings of the fiercely competitive sport of gig racing that thrives around Cornwall today.

Rosemullion has been delighted to support Helford River Gig Club, including helping to provide racing kit for its competing crews.

But perhaps the thing we like most about the club is that alongside the serious racing, it retains the community spirit that sits at the heart of the sport. Helford’s original Sunday morning “all-comers” sessions invited anyone interested to come along and have a go; that tradition continues today through its programme for new rowers.

Because every world champion has to sit in a gig for the first time somewhere.

The spirit of the Helford

Living and working beside the river, as well as using local ingredients where possible, means the feel of the Helford and the wider sea just beyond inevitably finds its way into what we make, too.

Our Seafarer’s Gin is perhaps the most obvious example: a savoury coastal gin made with samphire and Cornish seaweeds and inspired by Cornwall’s salty air and coastline.

It seems an appropriate bottle to reach for after a day spent on the Helford.

Although we do recommend completing the rowing, swimming and paddleboarding before opening a bottle of gin – once you’ve got something to celebrate!

Keeping Cornwall’s traditions alive

It is easy to take events such as the Helford Regatta for granted.

They arrive every summer, usually thanks to a comparatively small army of volunteers, boats appear on the water, children appear on the beach, races are won and lost and everyone goes home again.

But these gatherings matter.

They connect people to the places in which they live. The Helford is beloved by locals and by visitors, and it’s a great way to introduce another generation to the water. Local events like these preserve skills and traditions that could otherwise quietly disappear. And, perhaps most importantly, they give communities an excuse to come together and have some fun.

That seems well worth raising a glass to.

So whether you are rowing, swimming, paddling, cheering from the shore or simply enjoying the spectacle, we hope you have a wonderful Helford Regatta.

And when the racing is finally over, you can do what generations of Cornish sailors have always done rather well: find somewhere comfortable, discuss at length exactly where the race was won and lost, and pour something appropriate.

With best wishes from all of us at Rosemullion for a happy regatta day wherever you are.
